In addition to treating dogs, cats and other small animals at our practice, Dr. Weimer and Dr. Steed are the veterinarians for the Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro, as well. They are responsible for diagnosis of and treatment protocol for any sick animals. The Marine Mammal Care Center rescues and rehabilitates as possible stranded, injured or ill sea lions and seals. They are not equipped for long-term care of cetaceans (dolphins and whales), though they do respond on an emergency basis to stranded cetaceans. The Care Center routinely has California sea lions, harbor seals and elephant seals as patients. The Care Center is primarily staffed by volunteers and supported by donation. To learn more, click here and visit the Marine Mammal Care Center. Dr. Weimer is also the veterinarian for the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific. It is a new aquarium focusing on the sea life in the various zones of the Pacific Ocean, ranging from the temperate waters off the coast of California to the deep sea to coral reefs in tropical waters. Sea lions, seals, otters, turtles, and birds, as well as a huge variety of fishes and invertebrates, are on exhibit. Click here and visit the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific.

The first place you visit will be our reception area, where you will be greeted by one of our receptionists. After you have completed the necessary forms, you will be escorted into one of our exam rooms. The first people you will probably interact with at South Shores Pet Clinic are our receptionists. Heather, Kris, Lynne, Christina and Patrice schedule appointments, greet you and your pet when you arrive, assist in filling your pets prescriptions, and recommend dentals, vaccines, diets, flea products and shampoos (based on your pet's records and needs), and more! One of our doctors will soon be in to see you and your pet. The doctor will perform a physical exam of your pet, checking your pet's eyes, ears mouth and teeth, lymph nodes, heart and lungs, skeletal and muscular systems, abdomen, and skin. The doctor will question you about your pet's habits to gain insight into any problems. If any injections (such as Adequan or allergy shots) or vaccinations are required, the doctor will give them then.

This is our "mini-lab" where parasite evaluations and urinalysis are performed by veterinary technicians. It is adjacent to our Radiology department, and as you can see, this is where the doctors and techs review your pets x-rays. |
| X-rays area a daily routine in our state-of-the-art radiology facility. Gene takes extra special care of your pet while taking the radiographs needed for the doctor. | |
We perform in-house blood work in our lab, using Idexx analyzers. We can do both chemistry panels and complete blood counts. If your pet requires surgery and needs a basic pre-anesthetic work-up, or has come in as an emergency and we need immediate results, this is where we do the blood work. Our Tech also sterilizes packs in our autoclave in this room. Before surgery, out doctors scrub up in the sink pictured to the left of our blood analysis machines. Sterile gloves, gowns and many surgical instruments are stored in this room as well. |
| If your pet requires more extensive treatment, such as blood work or x-rays, we will take him to the treatment area. This is where we draw blood, collect urine samples, treat hot spots or other wounds, and administer fluids or medications. We also perform dentals and minor surgeries such as abscess repairs in the treatment area. We have a large island in the center of the room which has a built-in sink, dental equipment, oxygen hook-ups, lines for clippers and other tools, and spots to hang IV fluids for quick delivery. | |
The surgery suite is where we perform our spays and other surgeries. We use isoflurane/seloflurane anesthetic gas, a very safe gas from which pets recover quickly. We monitor heart rate and oxygen saturation with pulse oximeters. Your pet is kept warm during surgery by a heating pad. If the surgery is to be particularly long, your pet will be placed on IV fluids for the duration. Our doctors wear sterile gowns and gloves for surgery as well as caps and masks. Besides spays, we do exploratory surgeries, repair fractures (with pins, screws, wires or plates, as necessary), repair ruptured cruciate ligaments, remove bladder stones, and more. Our technicians are crucial in the care of your pet once your pet is here. Cecilia (head technician) along with our outstanding technicians will draw blood, administer medications, collect urine and fecal samples, take X-rays, assist in surgeries, perform dentals, and run lab work. They are an extremely dedicated and talented bunch! |
